Tom Spain
Head of Training, consultant
Tom Spain is Head of Training at Oxford EMI. He is responsible for course development and for our team of trainers. As a trainer himself, Tom has travelled to many different countries throughout Europe, Asia and North Africa to train university lecturers in EMI pedagogy. Tom is also part of our consultancy team working on EMI projects.
Before coming to Oxford, Tom taught academics and students in Spain at the University of Alcalá in Madrid. He co-authored the British Council’s Academic Teaching Excellence course which was developed with the Department of Education, University of Oxford. In Oxford, Tom worked at the Department of Education as a tutor and research assistant in EMI.
Having worked in Higher Education settings for many years, Tom has witnessed first-hand the growing impact of English on the sector for teachers, administrative staff and students. He is particularly interested in enabling the change of pedagogy needed in EMI to achieve successful teaching and learning.
