Who is the course for?

The English Language Skills for EMI Lecturers is an online, tutor-led course designed specifically to meet the needs of lecturers who teach in an EMI or TNE context.

[What is EMI?] [What is TNE?]

Why have we developed this course?

Having trained thousands of lecturers worldwide, we have gained a deep understanding of the functional language skills that foster interaction, clarity, and student engagement.

This expertise has shaped the design of this four-module course, which concentrates on practical and specific, classroom-ready language and phrases. This supports key teaching moments and helps lecturers feel confident in creating active and engaging learning environments.

How does the course work?

You follow one module a week for four weeks. Each module has a different focus. These are:

Module 1: Delivering a lecture in English
Module 2: Working with questions in English
Module 3: Setting up interactive classes in English
Module 4: Using visuals in English

Each module follows the same structure:
1. Exercises

Before each class, you will complete some short exercises, based on video material. This includes noticing key language in teaching contexts.

2. Live Class

During the 90-minute, interactive, live class, you will work with your expert tutor and group to:

  • Notice and explore more useful phrases in authentic video materials.
  • Share and reflect on your own use of these functional phrases.
  • Practise using the phrases in small groups.
  • Get feedback on your use of this language from your tutor.
  • Discuss questions with your tutor.
3. Extra Materials/Resources

After each class, you will receive a downloadable document of key functional phrases, ready to use immediately in your EMI classes, and links to other useful resources.
